A course for water system service inspectors that introduces the important aspects of the Safe Drinking Water Act and various other federal and state laws, codes, rules and regulations relating to the prevention of contamination of the public water supplies. The specific purposes of the training program are to:
- develop an increased awareness of the potential problems and liabilities resulting from cross-connections and lead in water supply systems,
- explain current legislative and regulatory requirements that must be implemented by water systems,
- provide specific information about the responsibilities of water system personnel,
- provide guidance on how to structure and implement an effective water system protection program, and
- prepare individuals to receive an endorsement to their water system operator’s certificate for conducting customer service inspection certifications.

Identification and Prevention of Cross Connections is an eight-hour, instructor-led classroom training course designed for licensed customer service inspectors to renew their licenses. It is an interactive course in which students will learn to identify common cross-connections and backflow devices in the field, perform an AVB field check, learn how to easily select the proper backflow device, and even learn to use two different lead test kits. It has been approved by TCEQ for eight hours of renewal credit for CSI and water operators and four hours of renewal credit for BPAT licensees.

This one-day course is designed to train employees how to perform the required field test at a water treatment plant. The student should understand the need for quality assurance and control. Analytical and calibration test is presented for hydrogen ion concentration (pH), chlorine residual, alkalinity, and turbidity. Water stability assessment and the proper procedures and techniques for collecting bacteriological samples and developing a sample siting plan are also covered.
Upon completion of this course, you will be issued 8 hours of training credit towards renewal of a water operator’s certificate by the TCEQ.
